I find my study abroad experience in South Africa to be the most significant and cherished point in the formation of my professional career. Combining the departments of Geosciences and Creative Media Industries, this program takes students to South Africa to conduct research on the Bushveld Igneous Complex while simultaneously conducting interviews and generating content for various short documentaries and photo essays about the impact of mining in the Bushveld region. I spent long days hiking with camera gear while attempting to conduct interviews with local South Africans from all levels of society about very controversial topics. I did a lot of investigating on my topic to give myself a proper story structure. I became deeply attached to this program and chose to volunteer my time to help promote this study abroad opportunity. I am in the process of making a recruitment video for the program and another recruitment video for the department of Geosciences in efforts to increase enrollment. This experience was crucial to the solidification of my skills in conducting interviews, collecting proper supplemental footage, editing short documentaries, and communicating complex topics to a lay audience.
